The Cannes Film Festival-The Verdict

admin | Cannes Film Festival | Friday, 06 June 2008

The subject matter for this article comes from Yahoo Entertainment site. The Cannes Film Festival has now closed, and the luminaries have all but gone home. The awards were voted on by a panel of nine judges of which Sean Penn was the head of this panel.

Real quick, I’ll tell you who won (some of them). France won top honors for “The Class”. It was awarded the Palme d’Or (something akin to our oscars). This was an unanimous decision, so it must have been good. Second prize goes to Italy  for “Gomorrah”. Benicio Del Toro (yeah!) got the best actor award for “Che’ “(the  cubans must be screaming right now!).  Steven Soderbergh directed the four hour movie. And while Del Toro got the best actor award, there were critics of the film (no doubt the length of the movie may have prompted this). There are so many awards that were passed out, that it would take too much space. So- I’ll cut to MY chase.

Clint Eastwood received  “special prizes”  for his work on “The Changeling” , but was shut out of key awards. Even though he never got  actual awards for his movie , it was
warmly received (yeah, I bet they really loved it- eyeball roll!) And Catherine Deneuve won 2 awards (remember Chanel No. 5- the old parfume commercial?).

And Angelina Jolie was never awarded anything for her portrayal in “The Changeling”. I guess the french don’t take lightly anyone (and her partner) who commandeers their red carpet. OUCH!
